“Springtime is the land awakening. The March winds are the morning yawn.”
Lewis Grizzard
Hey guys! I’m back. Spring is budding everywhere here on the west coast. Last weekend, unusually warm, meant crowded beaches filled with beach towels and boogie boards and colorful umbrellas. Out in the countryside, it is the golden hour of sunset and my sister throws the ball for our golden lab to fetch; he goes running back and forth in a streak of yellow enthusiasm outside a nearby window.
Daylight savings normally kills my soul a little bit, but this year it wasn’t so bad. When I wake up at 5am for my opening shift at the bakery, the moon is full and bright through the passing clouds, and the wind is warm as it rustles through the willow trees. I like waking up before the rest of the world.
There’s been a lot of slow changes in life lately: I’ve been writing my novel, my friend visited from college over last weekend, and a close friend had a minor surgery and is recovering. I kept pushing off the writing of all these blog posts (why all those blog posts were going up late), and I didn’t have much time for writing (at all) or reading (the massive pile of books is still waiting for me by my nightstand).
The thing is, I never want this blog to feel like a chore. For that reason, I decided to take two weeks off for a “spring break” of sorts to tend to my life. (And if we’re being honest, I spent most of those two weeks feeling guilty about not posting. As you do.)
During those weeks off, I thought a lot about where I want this blog to go and what I want to write about. In essence, I want this blog to feel like an inspired little haven of light and coziness and comfort, a place where we can have a cup of tea and talk about literature and philosophy and pretty things.
And so in that spirit, let me tell a few reasons I’m anticipating the season of warmth and sunshine—and a few things for you to look forward to as well:
- Morning coffee on the porch.
- Walking barefoot through grass.
- The sound of sprinklers.
- New beginnings.
- A fresh page in your journal.
- Sidewalk lemonade stands.
- Crisp and vibrant taste of tomatoes on salad.
- Flickering candles and ambiant indie music at nighttime.
- The crisp smell of torn basil leaves.
- Slices of lemon in my water.
- Quiet sunsets harmonized with birdsong; nightfall a chorus of frogs.
So with that, I wish you a happy first day of spring. I hope sunshine finds you wherever you are today.
I’ll be back to a normal posting schedule now, with new entries coming up every Monday and Thursday morning.
Until next time,
