Last week, I shared on Instagram a few upcoming books I want to read in January. I thought it would be fun to follow up last week’s blog post and share some reading goals I have for the new year. Since I’m not taking any college classes this year, I have a lot more time for reading during weekends and in the evenings after I get off work. And what will I do with all that spare time, you ask?! The answer, simply enough, is to devour as many books as I can get my hands on.

To that end, I’ve compiled a great long list of books to check out of the library in future months. My goal is to pick one from each of these lists for the month. For example, in January, I plan to read one classic (The Sun Also Rises // Ernest Hemingway), one nonfiction (The 4-Hour Workweek // Tim Ferrris), and one fiction (The Clockmaker’s Daughter // Kate Morton). In addition to these three, I’ll read whatever fluffy fictional novels I desire.

Classics:

  • Northanger Abbey // Jane Austen
  • Persuasion // Jane Austen
  • Mansfield Park // Jane Austen
  • Murder on the Orient Express // Agatha Christie
  • Oliver Twist // Charles Dickens
  • The Old Curiosity Shop // Charles Dickens
  • Middlemarch // George Eliot
  • Cranford // Elizabeth Gaskell
  • The Sun Also Rises // Ernest Hemingway
  • Phantastes // George MacDonald
  • Anna Karenina // Leo Tolstoy
  • The Importance of Being Earnest // Oscar Wilde

Nonfiction:

  • The 4-Hour Workweek // Tim Ferris
  • Walking on Water: Reflections on Faith and Art // Madeleine L’Engle
  • On Stories // C.S. Lewis
  • The Four Loves // C.S. Lewis
  • Leave Your Mark // Aliza Licht
  • Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail // Cheryl Strayed
  • On Fairy Stories // J.R.R. Tolkien

Fiction:

  • Watership Down // Richard Adams
  • Hannah Coulter // Wendell Barry
  • Norse Mythology // Neil Gaiman
  • The Clockmaker’s Daughter // Kate Morton
  • Out of the Silent Planet (trilogy) // C.S. Lewis
  • The Notebook // Nicholas Sparks
  • Deathless // Catherynne M. Valente
  • Wintersong // S.Jae-Jones
  • The Woman in Black // Susan Hill
  • To The Lighthouse // Virginia Woolf

There you have it! Hope this inspired you to look ahead at your reading goals and have some fun with finding new books to read. It’s a wonderfully comforting thought that there are always new and exciting books to discover in the world.

What are your reading goals for the new year?
