When I opened my notebook to write this blog post today, I meant only to write a letter of inspiration or a step-by-step guide to having an awesome solo Valentine’s day. But instead, I want to remind you a few things that I’ve been reminding myself lately.
1. First of all, buy your own chocolate and flowers if you want to. In fact, buy the most breathtaking bouquet you can possibly find. Clip the stems and put them in a vase of fresh water, and put them where you will see them first thing every morning. Watch them bloom and remember that you are blooming too, in your own time.
2. Getting lost in a beautiful story isn’t frivolous; it’s necessary. Whether a compelling book or a good movie, you need stories once in a while to remind you what matters. Make time to read. You’ll be glad you did.
3. A hot bath cures a multitude of problems. Use what you have: a face mask, rose petals, lotions, salts, essential oils. Fancy or simple, the effect is still the same.
4. Romantic love isn’t the only love worth celebrating today. Your family and friends have been there for you through thick and thin; make sure to thank them for that today. Tell your family what you love about them. Hugs are free, and they are extra appreciated on Valentine’s day (so is chocolate, actually—let’s be real).
5. One last thing. The theme of self-care in February is a beautiful one. We’re emerging from winter now, on the verge of spring, and in this space between seasons, you have time to breathe and nourish yourself before the world reawakens with spring.
Love,
